Insecurities

Insecurities “Oh but I can’t wear the same dress to both dances!” is a sentence heard by many boyfriends. In a situation where a high school couple is faced with going to two dances, the girl often whines about going to one because she would not dare be seen in the same dress. Typically, women are more concerned about image than men are. Women also feel the need for acceptance and approval more than men. Rather than be concerned about enjoying the experience girls spend more time worrying about how every little aspect of themselves looks and how they are appearing to others. In Guy de Maupassant’s The Necklace, Mathilde is a beautiful women stuck in the drab life of the middle class. She longs for extravagant dinners and beautiful dresses. Her life revolves around her dreams. Mathilde, like many other women, cares more about her image and how people view her in life, than she cares about life itself. A major problem society faces today is women’s desire for the perfect body. Magazine covers and movies make young women long for the bodies and lifestyles of models and movie stars. Image is a key part of these women’s lives. They feel they have to appear at their best at all times or risk the scrutiny of their peers. Mathilde is one of those women who cares too much of what other people may think. She cannot except the fact that she cannot afford the lifestyle of the upper class.
