Our two party systems started in 1787 in Philadelphia with the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. The North was known as the Federalists and the South was known as the Anti-Federalists. In 1790 the cotton gin was invented by the South, which empowered them to be able to take over the government in 1800; which had been in the hands of the North for the past 10 years. The South formed the Democratic-Republican Party to take over the Federalist government. In 1828 the name Republican was dropped and the Democratic Party was created. The Republican Party was later adopted in the 1850’s. The Republicans stood for things such as women’s suffrage, slavery abolishment and freedom of speech. This two party system gives citizens the chance to relate with two different points of view.
