Nathaniel Hawthorne is an American literature author from the nineteenth century. ... “The writings of Hawthorne are marked by subtle imagination, curious power of analysis, and exquisite purity of diction.” (Hawthorne 93). Hawthorne was an important writer; he was masterful at conveying his moralistic messages through metaphoric images in his writings.
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804 in a model house on Union Street in Salem. When Hawthorne was four years old, his father left for a voyage to South America and never returned. ... In 1808, Hawthorne’s father died in Surinam of yellow fever. When Nathaniel father died, he left his wife Elizabeth manning Hawthorne to care for her two girls and Nathaniel at age four. After the death of her husband, she went to live with her brothers and she became overly protective and pushed Nathaniel toward more isolated pursuits. In 1821, Hawthorne entered Bowdon College, Brunswick, Maine where he graduated three years later. ... In 1837 these stories were collected and published as Hawthorne Twice- Told Tales. “The stories selected for Twice- Told Tales reflect both Hawthorne’s interest in new England history and his fascination with daily life in his community. His best friend was the fourteenth president of the United States, Franklin Pierce, who appointed Hawthorne as consul at liver pool and Manchester, England. Hawthorne wrote a campaign biography for Franklin and he lived there for four years and spent a year and half in Italy writing The Marble Faun (1860), a story about the conflicts between innocence and guilt.
