Bill McDonald 1/8/02 English Mr. Brennan A Farewell to Arms Ernest Hemingway uses the “Iceberg Theory” throughout A Farewell to Arms. There are numerous occasions that prove this. The first passage that is showcased is “Ferguson cried again… she sobbed, then looked at Catherine and choked (p.248 top of page).” This passage is about Catherine and Ferguson talking about Henry and his situations without telling the reader. The second passage that is showcased is “are you married… he looked at the floor (p. 169).” This is about Henry and Rinaldi talking about Catherine and her problems without mentioning her.
