... When I was a child I remember being afraid to walk into stores because I knew that people could be watching me on the video cameras. ... In the near future you may not just feel as though you are merely being watched in Walmart and Zellers; you will be aware that there are people who trained to watch you walking down the street to your friend’s house and other such simple activities. In the novel 1984 by George Orwell the population was being constantly watched by “Big Brother”. Also Big Brother and the party strive towards altering the dictionary so certain words cannot be used when the party does not want them to be used. ... This is comparable to the methods portrayed in 1984 where Big Brother changes the facts so that he is right, giving the perception that the party was infallible.
It has been argued that the installation of these cameras in the urban population is not an invasion of privacy because there are so many cameras and not enough people to monitor them. ... This proves that with these new high-tech cameras there is enough useless footage deleted, which means they will be able find you quickly and easily if they want, whether you are innocent or not, and they can follow your every movement until you reach your doorstep.
