The world as we know it has crumbled. Most of the cities have exploded. War and looting have left our globe a desolate wasteland. The Australian Outback is the setting for this futuristic tale, and the highway is a battleground. Pillagers and scavengers roam the outback seeking fuel and food. Many of these wanderers will do anything, including rape, theft and murder, to get what they want. The title character, Max, is a former highway patrolman hardened by the loss of his family. He seeks fuel for his car and is led into the quarters of the Defenders, who have a refinery. The Defenders need Max to deliver a semi and drive the semi so they can escape the ruthless Marauders, a gang of barbarians who have threatened the Defenders. Max is the only man capable of performing this good and necessary job, but he is no hero, because he does the job reluctantly and selfishly. Max is the most qualified person to perform the job. Being an ex-highway Patrolman, Max has intimate knowledge of the highways and is obviously an experienced driver. In the first scene Max eludes Marauders and makes a very difficult driving maneuver by swerving through some wreckage while the pursuing Marauders crash and flip their cars. Max also has very quick reflexes. There is an early scene where a rattlesnake is on a tree and tries to strike Max. Max strikes first snatching the snake just behind the head. The snake’s owner, the Gyro Captain, then comments that no one has ever done that before. Finally, Max proves he is the one for the job by returning to the Defenders with the semi.
