Romero is an excellently done movie about the struggles that still go on today between the poor and the rich, the government and the priests, and even the priests against priests, in El Salvador during the late 1970’s to the early 1980’s. ...
Archbishop Oscar Romero was instated to the position of archbishop of El Salvador because he was the meek candidate who wouldn’t change anything, avoid offending the rich, influential people who gave sizeable donations to the church, and he would leave the poor “where they belong”. Romero viewed the church not as a place of worship “that suffers no persecution but enjoys the privileges and support of the things of the earth”. ... In the movie, one of Romero’s friends is kidnapped, raped and had her tongue cut out and then she was shot and left for dead.
