Vengeance is a punishment inflicted in retaliation for an injury or offense. The novel The Count of Monte Cristo is based on the theme of vengeance. The main character is Edmond Dantes is cheated by four people he thought were friends. These so called “friends” were Danglars, Caderrousse, Fernand, and Villefort. Each person had their own motives for cheating Edmond. Danglars, Caderrouse, and Fernand all participated in writing a letter that was responsible for sending Edmond away in Prison. The main reason for Danglars and Fernand was jealousy. Danglars was second in line to be captain of a ship if something happened to the present captain and Edmond Dantes was first in line.
