Alienation In the world we live in today, it is sometimes very difficult to make it (be successful) if you do not have a couple of things. One is a good college education and a master’s degree in something. The other one is knowing the right people, and having connections. Yes, some people start from having nothing to becoming multi-millionaires or owners of huge corporations that are the backbone of the world. A good way to getting the right connections and having these people like you is being friendly and considerate to them, even if you hate them and everything about them. In Holden’s case, this would be a very difficult thing for him to accomplish due to the fact that he cannot get along with hardly anyone. Among the few people he does get along with and like is his family, especially his little sister. In the book, it’s not all Holden’s fault that he doesn’t get along with people. Also, a lot of the people associated with him don’t care about him, they just walk all over him and don’t think twice about it. If you look back to every “relationship” in the book, Holden attempts to make it a good thing, and make sure everything goes right. He tries very hard to get along with the people. For example, when he meets the three women in the cocktail lounge, he originally thinks that all three are rather ugly, but after awhile, he becomes somewhat attracted to one of them.
