Vocabulary:
Pre-History-
Paleolithic- Old Stone Age- Man as hunter/gatherer
Neolithic- New Stone Age- Man in agrarian society, no need to move around a lot
Megalithic- use of large stones and boulders
Cyclopean Masonry- use of huge boulders but without masonry
Mesopotamia-
Ziggurat- a temple elevated on an artificial mound- step pyramid with a rectangular base
Crenellations- looks like a decorative element, but NOT, used as a fortification concept
Hammurabi- warrior king- first written code of laws
Nebuchaddnezzar- Palace of Nebuchaddnezzar with the Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Cuneiform- first writing appears
Lamassu- giant winged bull guardian figure (Assyrians)
Hypostyle hall- a large hall composed of many columns placed close together to support the roof
Wattle & Daub (mud) Construction- bundle up reeds in order to make columns due to lack of wood
Battered Wall-
Apadana- an audience hall in Persian palace architecture
