Information was gathered through a personal interview, internet sources and publications. Schlumberger was chosen because of their long running history with using the latest in information technology to communicate internally within the company and externally with their clients. Schlumberger is a technological service company that is split into two business segments. They employ over 80,000 employees working in nearly 100 countries. Schlumberger Oilfield Services offers services, products, and technical solutions to the oil and gas exploration and production industry. Schlumberger Network Solutions, which is a subsidiary of the Oilfield Services division, provides information technology and security solutions to oil and gas companies. The other segment of Schlumberger is SchlumbergerSema. They provide information technology consulting, systems integration, managed services and related products to the oil and gas industry as well as a wide range of industries. To communicate internally Schlumberger uses an information network called SINet. It connects 17,000 users at 400 locations in over 50 countries, and it is their main source of mass communication. The web is Schlumberger’s number two method of communication. Employees can access an intranet or local database and pull private company information off the web. Face to face meetings are still an integral part if internal communication for Schlumberger. Meetings are held weekly and information is passed on via power point presentations and “roundtable” discussions. Schlumberger uses videoconferences to have face to face meeting with clients who are out of town. It is a multi channel videoconference. This gives employees the ability to include clients in different countries in one conversation. Net meetings are scheduled as well. Employees can talk, share information, and show presentations via the internet. A SWOT analysis was performed on the communication system of Schlumberger. Strengths include a huge information database that connects all 80,000 employees. They use video conferencing and net meeting to keep in contact with out of town clients. Schlumberger also promotes the empowerment of employees to open the lines of communication. They has a tendency to overload it employees with to much information. Schlumberger needs to listen more to their employees and clients to know how to communicate more efficiently. Schlumberger has taken full advantage of their opportunities. They constantly are investing in new communication technology to give them a competitive edge. The competition seems to be a little less rigid and more creative than Schlumberger. This allows them to get their message across quicker. Our recommendations to improve communications at Schlumberger are to continue to investing in technology to stay on top, listen more to employees and clients, and to be more creative in promoting the company’s image. 2.0 Company History “Schlumberger was founded in 1927 by two brothers who invented the revolutionary electrical wireline logging technique for oil wells, which dramatically improved the detection and evaluation of oil and gas deposits. Through extensive investment in technology research, development of serves and acquisitions, Schlumberger, by the mid 1990’s, had grown to become a full provider of technology services to the global petroleum exploration and production industry.”(www.slb.com) “Schlumberger is now a global technology services company with corporate offices in New York, Paris and the Hague.
