Pastoral Epistles Although Ephesian and our home culture are different, there were also similarities. And both cultures had an impact on the church. Paul’s instructions to Timothy did indeed help him lead his church in his culture and that very same instruction can be applies to the leaders of today, even thought the cultures may be slightly different Gods word doesn’t change. The city of Ephesus was located in a prime position on the west coast of Asia Minor. It was located right at the mouth of the river Cayster, a major seaport, located on one of the most important trade routes of Tarsus. This trade route linked Syria to central Asia Minor and would cross the Amanus Mountains by the Syrian Gates through the Taurus range. It became part of the Roman Empire in about 133 B.C as part of the province of Asia, after suffering terribly during the 1st century civil wars. Ephesus was a very influential city. As well as being influential, it was also very prosperous. There were many factors contributing to the success and prosperity of this city. One of the main reasons for the prosperity for this city was the fact that it was located right at the mouth of the river Cayster. This was the most favorable seaport in the province of Asia and the most important trade center west of Tarsus. This seaport also had what was called an ‘artificial seaport’ as well as a natural one. This meant that the harbour was more accessible to the larger ships of the ocean as well as the small. The seaport of Ephesus was so amazing that it rivaled with Miletus, another high ranking seaport in Asia. As well as having the seaport as an asset to the economy, it was also connected by highways to the chief cities of the province, which allowed for further trade developments. The Ephesian economy was based around trade, with its most rewarding export being items related to Artimes, their God.
