The content and the aesthetic quality of the book make the book interesting and easy on the eyes, but the book’s major strength is the way it is organized. The simple structure makes it easy to find what you need quickly, without being intimidated. This is highly effective because the target audience is freshman composition students, who are just beginning their college writing careers. The book includes an introduction called “Why Writing Matters”, which has 11 specific sections that are then broken down into more specific sub-sections. For example, one section is called “the writing process”. It is divided into eight sub-sections: 1) the five-step writing process, 2) writing is a recursive process, 3) prewriting, 4) planning, 5) drafting, 6) revising, editing, and proofreading, 7) final draft and 8) source documentation. This is a great walk-through of the writing process. It is organized into logical, easy-to-follow steps. The book itself has tabs that divide it into easily digestible chunks of information. Each of the major subject areas has a tab. The tabs have a table of contents for the section and a list of frequently asked questions with page numbers for the answers along side of them. The authors are very clear as to what is on each page and in each section. For example, one of the tabs is labeled “Essays and Paragraphs”.
