A True Passion: By When I was little I would always want to help my mom out with cooking. I remember when I was able to make Macaroni and Cheese by myself. I was so overjoyed; I would make it every day that I could. Cooking has always been on the top of my list and I would gladly take a job in that field. The Interest inventory is a survey that you can take that will help you know what field of jobs that fit you. I took the Interest Survey and it reassured me that I am an art/communications person. The second option was science/technology. Science/technology is a big part of being in the cooking business. CHEF (n)- A cook, especially the chief cook of a large kitchen staff. When you think of a chef you think of someone who cooks food in a kitchen. A job that most people think is easy. The WOIS describes a chef as, “A person who prepares or oversees the preparation of unique, high quality food. In a large restaurant, chefs may specialize in a specific cooking operation.” I asked Mr. Betts what schooling a chef needed, Kent replied, “A classically trained chief needs a minimum of high school education. I didn’t need any more formal job education after High School. Some Chefs do a course on Culinary Arts. I wish I had done more schooling to improve my cooking skills. In the long run it would have helped me quit a bit.” There is a much higher availability of jobs on the higher paying end of the spectrum for chefs who receive university education. Depending on what type of chef you are determines your salary. Chefs that work in a hotel restaurant get more money than those in other restaurants. There are higher potential earnings for those that receive two to four years of training at some of the fine culinary institutes. The wages of a beginning chef rang from $9.00- $14.40 per hour. Certified chefs can earn up to $150,000 per year. There are benefits of being a chef. Some get free meals from the restaurant and others, free health insurance.
