Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky. When he was two years old, his family moved to a farm on Knob Creek. His life was very lonely and hard. In 1816, the Lincolns decided to move to Indiana. His father married Sarah Bush Johnston. Abe was attached to his stepmother and he referred to her as “my angel mother.” Abe became very skilled with an axe. He made many fence rails by splitting poles and this gave him the nickname Railsplitter. When Lincoln was 19 years old he worked in a local general store nearby Gentryville.
