The novel Ganglands by Maureen McCartney portray teenagers and the pressure they deal with in a fast, harsh modern world, death love hatred and friendship. The novel explores the themes of parent and teenage relationships, wealth, social responsibility and honesty to oneself. Initially, Kelly and her father both had a good relationship, but as the novel progresses, Kelly became frustrated with her father’s drinking and his laziness. Kelly was fond of her father because he always had a positive attitude, especially when talking to his ex-wife Irene over the phone although this irritated Kelly as Irene left Kelly and Keith. As time went by, Kelly felt distant from Keith because she saw Keith drinking his money away and he seemed to be a snob, because he didn’t have a positive attitude to Con, but would rather Kelly stayed with Phil, who was at university and appeared to have a promising future. Kelly despised her mother for leaving and never forgave her. After the death of Vasillios and much thinking by Kelly, finally she wrote a letter to her mother who replied indirectly with a phone call by Kelly’s little brother Jason. Kelly realised that she still loved her mother after all. Con and his parents had a reasonably good relationship until the death of Vasillios. Con’s parents gave Con much grief over his death and blamed Con for not preventing Vasillios from being killed. Con’s parents get upset with Con, because he didn’t follow the Greek tradition after the death of his brother. Con still felt he should stay with his parents to help them out in spite of their criticism. Kelly’s many friends, and especially her boyfriend, were all reasonably wealthy. She knew them because she earned a scholarship to a private privileged school. Kelly wasn’t very financially well off because her father had a basic job, which didn’t provide much money and if he had any savings, he drank much of it away. Kelly then felt out of place with her friends.
