Fitting Rooms Character Analysis Mariel

Character Analysis

Character’s Name:
My character’s name is Mariel Hemingway, no relations to Earnest, that she knows of. ... The name Mariel is of significance to her because she was named after her great grandmother.

Age of Character:
Mariel is 35 years old and at this stage of her life, she feels a little trapped and like she has nothing to look forward to. ... Society, nowadays, doesn’t seem to have a high divorce rate in mid- thirties with young children, you usually think of divorcees as being older with older children in possibly their teen years, which makes the situation even more difficult on Mariel, her children are very important to her and so is their father. Many women I’ve talked to said those years of their marriage were some of the happiest years they’ve ever had, but it isn’t the same situation for Mariel. ... Mariel’s ideal image of a woman is someone who’s strong, independent successful and feminine, which is basically a mixture of Mariel’s qualities and Linda’s qualities together, which is why they are friends, they have a nice balance. ... I don’t think Mariel has many of these masculine qualities and would be able to stand up to a man as many women could, like Linda, for example which proves hard for her in life when trying to achieve her goals, especially as much as Gary is concerned.

Relationships:
The most important relationships to my character are of that to her husband, Gary and her best friend, Linda, and sadly, lagging behind at this point in time of her life are the relationships with her children. Mariel has a huge lack of spiritual relationship with any of these people, most importantly, her husband, I believe had they had a more intimate spiritual relationship together, none of the problems that exist between them would be apparent today. Neither of her most important relationships are strictly platonic, I believe she values Linda almost like an older sister at times, the way she watches out for her, takes care of her and gives her useful advice when she needs it which is something Mariel really values. Linda really cares about Mariel’s well being and she respects and loves that aspect of their relationship like any pair of friends would. Mariel’s familial relationships are really screwy, and it upsets her immensely, but most of the time she feels she can do nothing to help them, when in truth, there is no other way for her to make them better if she doesn’t get out there and work on them herself. The romantic relationships in Mariel’s life are nonexistent, she can’t even stand for Gary to touch her much less have any sort of romantic contact of sorts. ... I think the balance Linda and Mariel have promotes their relationship, but when it begins to swing dramatically between both sides it becomes more like a puppy and it’s owner after a while and doesn’t work.
