Ralph Johnson Bunch was born on August 7, 1904 in Detroit, Michigan. ... Three years after Ralph was born the family moved to Cleveland (Ohio), Knoxville (Tennessee), and Toledo (Ohio). In Toledo, Ralph attended Barstow School and sold newspapers on street corners to add to the family income. His sister was born in 1909 and Ralph’s grandmother, Nana, made the family move once again back to Detroit. ... During the Great Depression, Ralph’s family didn’t suffer as much as other families. In 1931-32, Ralph received a Rosenwald Fellowship to study Togoland and Dahomey. ... After a year, Ralph was in Paris and called his family to come and see him. In November 1932, Ralph visited Dahomey and Tologland and did research on the government.
