“If you had just one shot. Just one opportunity to cease everything you ever wanted. Would you capture it? Or just let it slip?” For their whole lives the people of inner city Detroit or “8 mile” look for their one opportunity to shine and to build a life for themselves. For most the opportunity never comes but for a select few, who never give up their dreams, it happens. It doesn’t matter if you are poor white trash or black it can happen. Throughout the movie issues are subliminally intertwined with movie that include race, class and sexuality and the struggle for a good life. A majority of the people in the movie are African American and live on 8 mile. Almost every weekend they hold freestyle battles where one-on-one each person gets a chance to show off his lyrical talents in front of the hundreds of people who come looking to be impressed.
