Catch-22 by Joseph Heller was written mainly in the 1950s and in 1960, as it was first published in 1961. This novel has a very strong relationship to world events at the time, as Heller uses the events which occurred during the end and immediately after World War II to illustrate several points about America and the ideals that drive it. Although these aspects were rather American in nature, the way which Heller brings them about is somewhat unconventional, but this method is necessary to create the desired effect on the reader. ... During this time period, many felt American pride, but they also feared the war going on overseas, as Heller describes. ... The traits they exhibited throughout the events that unfolded is what gives us insight into 1950s America.
Each of the events listed earlier were used by Joseph Heller throughout the story, but he used them satirically to make fun of the way we viewed some of these morals, however he was also saying something about the nations state of chaos. This is what is somewhat different than other literature from the time; there is not very much American satire from that era. ... Heller makes fun of the communist scare in a few places, one of which is about 1/3rd of the way into the book:
" What makes you so sure Major Major is a Communist? ... Several times through out the book Heller talks about prostitution, which may have been a bigger problem in the 50s and 60s than it is today. ... However, Heller used subtle hints like this throughout the book to make fun of the way Americans view the world around them. For example, at one point Heller uses a cat and Hungry Joe in a fight do show the tendencies of Americans to fight. ... Thus, Heller used several of Yossarians comrades to demonstrate the effects of war. ... Soldiers flush the people of the cities into the streets.
