WHEN most people think of a job in the marine industry, images of hot, dirty and dangerous conditions come to mind. Because of this, members of the industry in Singapore have come up with almost $1 million to revamp the sector's image. Announcing the million-dollar makeover, Mr Heng Chiang Gnee, president of the Association of Singapore Marine Industries (Asmi), said in a speech last night that Singapore's marine sector did not enjoy as strong a reputation at home as it did overseas. 'While the world recognises our leadership in rig-building, offshore engineering work and specialised ship repair and conversion, the marine industry does not enjoy the same recognition on the home front,' he said at Asmi's 35th anniversary dinner and dance.
