Beethoven
Ludwig Von Beethoven was born December 16, 1770 in Bonn, Germany into a musical family. Flemish in origin, Beethoven’s grandfather, Ludwig, settled in Bonn as a singer in the court of Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and was Beethoven’s first teacher. The elder Beethoven later became Kapellmeister (music director) of the court. Johann Beethoven was a member of the choir but never displayed any outstanding talent. The younger Ludwig Beethoven was a very talented child, but he was not the child prodigy Mozart had been. At age eleven, little Beethoven began studying under the court organist Christian Neefe, and soon began publishing his own music. ... He was instrumental in Beethoven’s extant first composition Variation on March by Dressler, published at Mannheim. By 1782, Beethoven had become assistant court organist.
While the elder Ludwig Beethoven lived, the family was very prosperous. ... Beethoven’s father had become an alcoholic and was eventually fired from his court position, leaving his son the sole support of the family. In 1783, Beethoven was appointed continuo player to the Bonn opera. ... During his visit to Vienna, Mozart was so impressed with Beethoven’s developing talents that he commented to his friends, “keep your eyes on him, someday he will give the world something to talk about” (Kamien 278). It would be five years before Beethoven made the move back to Vienna.
Beethoven’s duties during the following five years included playing viola in the theatre orchestra and music teacher to the widow Joseph von Breuning children. ... Von Waldstein became one of Beethoven’s devoted fans. It was through Waldstein that Beethoven was introduced to Joseph Haydn, who was passing through Bonn on his way to London. Haydn offered to take Beethoven as a pupil and in the autumn of 1792, Beethoven left Bonn while the armies of the French Revolution were storming into the Rhineland provinces.
