The Australian Sports commission and Active Australia have been keen to promote a healthy outdoor lifestyle through promotional campaigns and initiatives that aim to enrich the lives of Australians through sport. The scope of one of Active Australia’s recent programs has been to increase the exposure and participation in volleyball and the child-friendly modified version Mini-volleyball in Australia. This Assignment will attempt to identify some of the government initiatives and programs, analyze sport participation trends, the place of non-traditional sports and the role of modified sports in Australia.
Active Australia is an Australian Sporting Commission (ASC) funded initiative that aims to increase participation in a variety of sports to enrich the lives of all Australians (Active Australia, 2003). ... Active Australia also has a number of generic programs aimed at increasing over all activity levels such as “Active Australia Day”. ... The aim of the ASC is to administer and fund sport in Australia on behalf of the federal government developing elite sporting excellence and increasing community participation (ASC, 2003). Physical inactivity is a risk factor, which contributes to an up most of 6,400 deaths per year and Direct health care costs attributable to physical inactivity in Australia have been estimated at upwards of $370 million per annum; these deaths and costs are potentially avoidable if the sedentary and low active population became at least moderately active (The cost of illness, 2000). Active Australia Co-ordinates numerous initiatives in all areas of Australian society. The “Active Australia Day” program is one of the organizations key initiatives, these initiatives are not only seen as a positive step in dealing with increased levels of obesity, inactivity related illness and lack of participation in regular physical activity confronting Australians but also is a reminder to people of all ages and abilities that sport and exercise can be fun and doesnt need to be hard work. Initiatives such as “Active Australia Day” promote the participation of sport in Australia and also increase the exposure of specific sports.
The concept of modified sports has existed in Australia since the 1980’s, it grew from the apprehension that unsuitable equipment or playing surfaces, complex rules and an overemphasis on winning could actually discourage children from participating in sport.
