In Black Boy a critical chapter is chapter ten. This is the point in the book where moving to the north almost seems hopeless. Richard realizes that even if he continues to save what little money he has, it will still take him forever to save up enough to move to the north. Chapter ten represents a pivotal moment in Richard's life because he realizes that in order to survive the South, he must obey rather than challenge those who suppress him. With this revelation Richard knows that in order to reach his goals moving to the North is the only way. Determined to make more money, Richard decides to sacrifice his morals to save more money. In this chapter Richard gets a job at a drug store as a helper. But he does not know how to talk or respond to white people. He was getting yelled at all the time too. Sense he did not know the right words to say to his white boss he was soon fired. Richard becomes more conscious of the roles that other black boys assume in their jobs. The next job that Richard took was at a hotel as a hallboy.
