The novel I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem, written by Mayse Conde, is about a slave girl’s life story. In the story, I am fascinated by how she sacrifices her freedom to love a slave man, a man she respects and will do anything to be with, which at the same time makes me think about one’s personal freedom in relationships, also about and religious beliefs. ... Tituba wants to escape the pain it put her through. ... Tituba relationship with them, is questionable sometimes because the spirit world can be confusing, yet Tituba took important things from both of them. ... Mama Yaya took Tituba in when her mother was hung and tried to guide her in a better direction, teaching her how to heal with magic. She also told her life is not what it seems to be, which Tituba discovers for herself when she begins having a relationship with John Indian, the slave. Tituba has to change her life around for the love of a man, giving up her freedom and becoming enslaved.
