Pot, grass, weed, bud or reefer; whatever the term may be, marijuana has been a topic of major political and moral debate for ages. Once, and still considered by many people, to be a highly therapeutic and harmless substance, marijuana has been a hot topic for legal debate in many places in the world for quite some time . Billions upon billions of federal and state funds have been spent to try to combat, without much success, the cultivation, possession, and private use of marijuana. The decriminalization of marijuana would lead to lower taxes, increased revenues for both the federal and state agencies, less crowded jails, and less unjustly prosecuted "criminals" in our society. Decriminalization is essentially no longer seeing something as a major crime and decreasing the penalty that goes along with it. Instead of the offender being arrested, prosecuted, and jailed; the accused would receive a ticket, much like that for a traffic offense, and would pay a designated amount of money as a fine. Both federal and state governments would generate a large amount of new funds from these fines. Also, they would be saving an enormous amount of money from the decrease in law enforcement and prosecution costs.
