Dogen didn’t say that zazen is the means to enlightenment. Zazen, itself, is realization; in this seated meditation one can become one with all the countless things of existence, permeating time, delving into eternal consciousness. Zazen and without-thinking both exist pre-object, pre-subject, and pre-reflective thinking, they both lie in the content of pure experiential reality. ... It seems that that the true consciousness of zazen, realization, satori, and enlightenment is based on the form of consciousness that is essential in all modes of consciousness.
