It was a blistery cold day. The streets were pathed with ice, and the sidewalks were litered with frozen debre. People could be seen struggling against the wind seeking shelter from the horrid conditions. On this day, the distance squad had practice. The track coach was a man who never seemed to cancel practice. "Get them doggies rollin'," he said to the team. There was a pause, and then finally the reluctant team reached their feet to stretch. "The weather man said it was 2 degrees outside. He said something about a windchill factor, but I wasn't listening," stated the coach. The team went through their normal stretching routine. They did not know or anticipate the workout that was to follow. Like so many soldiers, they sounded off in unison. When the stretching seised, a great silence assended the gymnasium. The final words could be heard bouncing off the walls until they retreeted into the floor boards. "Some of you girls are going to become men today," said the coach matter of factly. "Today's workout is going to put hair on your chests. Today," he said, "We are running to County Park and back!" The silence remained tattered to the floor boards like only silence can. After all, they had only run to the park in the summer, and even then they didn't run back.
