The casino proponents are urging you to vote in support of a Maine casino for the promise of 10,000 jobs and millions of dollars in tax relief. ... The casino will draw from the existing southern Maine employee base, raiding local businesses and making it difficult for the companies to staff their hotels, restaurants, and factory floors. ... For all of us who live in Maine, it’s not news that York County has almost no affordable housing. ... goes on to talk about where the State’s share will go after costs: 50% to residential property tax relief and 40% to local schools, 5% to the Maine State Grant Program, 5% to a scholarship fund. ...
Maine voters could do much better. Maine could auction off a license to operate a casino for hundreds of millions of dollars and still take a cut from the slot machines on top of that. ... The Illinois license permitted only 1,200 slot machines and 60 table games, compared to the 4,000 slots and 180 table games the Maine tribes hope to operate in their proposed casino.
the percentage of the slot revenues the state stands to gain under the Maine tribes proposal is also a bad deal. Giving the state 25 percent would be realistic if the casino were to be located in a northern Maine community such as Houlton, not in Sanford, which is less than two hours away from Boston, one of the largest cities in the country.
