August 22, 2003 Chapter 8 Communication and Relational Dynamics Developmental Models-Mark Knapp In chapter 8 of our text we are introduced to one of the best-known models of relational stages that was developed by Mark Knapp, who broke down the rise and fall of relationships into ten stages, contained in to broad phases of “coming together” and “coming apart.” (325). The initiating stage is usually brief and it generally follows conventional formulas: handshakes, remarks about subjects like the weather and friendly expressions. Experimenting involves small talk (325) and intensifying stage is where interpersonal relationship begins to develop. (326) Integrating stage is a time when we give up some characteristics of our old selves and develop shared identities and in bonding, the parties make symbolic public gestures to show the world that their relationship exists. (328) Differentiating is the point where the “hold me tight” orientation that has existed shits, and “put me down “ messages begin to occur.
