Geisha women are renowned for their exquisite talents, performances, appearance, and rich historical, traditional and cultural background. ... Those Geisha who do not become full fledged and self-sufficient will often turn to prostitution for survival, with no other choice in mind resulting in this misconception. As depicted in Memoirs of a Geisha written by Arthur Golding, geisha obtain an elegance and exquisiteness unlike any other culture, which differentiates them into an elite class of individuals. Geisha women are further portrayed as remarkable people in Geisha” A Vanishing World, which illustrates the lives of specific Geisha and the lifestyle they adhere to. Contrary to Western belief, geisha women are not prostitutes, but talented, renowned, and prominent figures in Japanese history and culture.
A geisha women encompasses a uniqueness concerning tradition, and values honour and respect above all else. To be viewed as a prostitute brings both a degrading and immeasurable dissatisfaction, damaging the many years of exerted effort into becoming a full-fledged geisha. Years and years of apprenticeship, training, effort, sacrifice, and harsh conditions are involved in becoming a Geisha. It is not as simple as going through one, or maybe two years of school; a Geisha will encounter schooling from a ripe age of five or six. Instead of learning English a geisha will learn a dance or performance, or how to play a musical instrument, instead of learning science, a geisha will adopt the strategies and methods of tying kimono. “There would have to be geisha who could dance, Geisha who could sing, and Geisha who could play the Shamisen. ... 231) In Geisha life it is no easier to be bequeathed into the arts of this profession as there are so many aspects involved. Although the geisha ethnicity appears as a culture rich in old tradition, many modern activities are deeply interwoven in the lives of geisha society. geisha should not be classified as a degrading individual as a prostitute but praised for the talented art forms they are trained in and experienced through many years of harsh and exerting training. ... It is a very competitive field in a geisha district. Not all geisha achieve prominent status and become wealthy and successful; there are those who must rely on other professions. In this scenario the misconception is established, geisha must turn to prostitution as no other skills in life are known to them other than that of a geisha performer, if this fails, prostitution was an outlet for those who struggled in geisha society.
