When the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, people all over the world were surprised by the unimaginable power of nuclear technology. ... Nuclear weapons are so powerful that neither side dares to attack each other first. ... In the article ¡°Global Nuclear Stockpiles, 1945-2002¡±, Robert Norris writes ¡°The five major nuclear powers (USA, Russia, UK, France and China) currently have more than 20,000 nuclear warheads in their arsenals¡± (Norris 1). ... In Richard Wolfson¡¯s book Nuclear Choice, he writes ¡°Government estimates suggest that over half of the United States¡¯ population could be killed by the prompt effects of al all-out nuclear war¡± (331).
