“How does cinematography, editing and sound create meaning in the sequence from ‘City Of Angels’”
Meaning in films can be created in many ways, mise en scene, editing, cinematography and sound. ... The sound used in a horror movie is also going to be very different to that of an action, as horror movies use o lot of non-diegetic music to create suspense whereas an action movie will rely more on diegetic sounds like explosions and shouting as well as a dramatic, up tempo music to create the mood and drama required in an action film.
Directors also use different aspects of film language in certain ways to create their own ‘signature’ style of directing. Baz Lurhman for example, uses fast pace editing and strange camera angles to create meaning in his work and to create his own ‘signature’.
The film I have chosen to study is ‘City of Angels’ which is directed by Brad silberling. The film is about woman (Meg Ryan) who falls in love with an angel (Nicholas Cage), but for the angel to be able to love her in return he has to become human by falling from heaven.
The sequence I have chosen to analyse is quite near the end where the angel decides to jump from a skyscraper in order to become human. I have chosen this sequence as I feel it uses a lot of different aspects of film language to create meaning without using much dialogue. I t is also very important in the development of the narrative, the sequence lasts two minutes and forty seconds. The three aspects of film language that I will be focussing on will be cinematography, editing and sound as I feel they are the most relevant to the sequence.
