PERSUASIVE SPEECH
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that the current death penalty punitive system is too expensive compared too its effectiveness and should be discontinued.
INTRODRUCTION:
Attention Getter: The state of California leads the nation in two areas; we have the worst budget crisis of any state and we have the most people on death row. According to the California Department of Finance, our budget deficit as of February was approximately 35 billion dollars. As of March, the Department of Corrections report 610 people awaiting execution on death row. The Sacramento Bee reported that Californians spend 90 million dollars per year for just those people sentenced to death. ...
Credibility Statement: As a California citizen and taxpayer, I am concerned about both my physical safety and my financial safety; and therefore I began thoroughly researching the death penalty in California.
Thesis: What I have discovered is that California’s current capital punishment system is seriously dysfunctional and punishes the public.
Preview: I would like to share with you some of the facts I uncovered about the shortcomings of California’s capital punishment system as well as offer you some remedies to this problem.
