It is for this reason that Karl Marx saw political emancipation as a limited type of emancipation, for although it granted liberty for its citizens, the liberty that it assured was only a liberty of self interest; to engage in the materiel elements of society, not a liberation from those elements. Marx maintained that because the values inherently expressed in a political state do not reflect the values of a society in which man is fully emancipated, that society is living in prehistory where the actualization of man has yet to be achieved. It is no wonder why Marx asks the question of not who should be emancipated but rather “what kind of emancipation is involved” (Marx, 30) Marx’s understanding of the paradoxical nature of the political state explains the incompleteness of it and it why, as a members of a community, civil society is couched in man’s egoism and monadic existence. ...
Although political emancipation is a major step in the process of human emancipation it is clearly not the one that Marx desires or sees as “history”. During Marx’s time, the issue of political emancipation heavily dealt with the issue of religion. Antagonisms between Jews living in Christian states were numerous and the desire for a society free from religious privilege was present. ... (Marx, 31) Although the state liberated itself from religion it did not liberate man from religion. Marx believed that “if we find in a country which has attained full political emancipation that religion…is fresh and vigorous, this is proof that the existence of religion is not at all opposed to the perfection of the state. ...
The fact that “the state can liberate itself from a constraint (religion) without man himself being really liberated; that a state may be a free state without himself being a free man” indicates the limits of freedom within political emancipation (Marx, 32) This crux explains the fact that For Marx, political emancipation “is the final form of human emancipation within the framework of the prevailing social order.” (Marx, 33) Something within the prevailing social order must be hindering the existence of a socialized community.
