In God Bless the Child, Billie Holiday was speaking of a child
that she could very much relate to herself. ...
“Mama may have, Papa may have But God bless the child that’s got his own That’s got is own.” (Line 20) Here, Billie Holiday reflects on regardless of whether mother and father have money and work, good for the child that does it and makes it on their own. The child doesn’t need their mother and father to do things for them for him/her to be able to make it and be who and what they want to be.
