Gutierrez 1 Kidney disease is a terrible affliction that affects many Americans every year. Whether it be Chronic kidney disease or Acute kidney disease, their are many people around the world that suffer day after day with the uncertainty of the simple fact whether will they live and suffer another day or will they just simply give up the fight. Yes there are alternatives like transplantation, but according to Howard Joyce Price, “About 50,000 Americans now await kidney transplantation, a figure expected to double by 2010, says the richmond based United Network for Organ Sharing.” Also, one can choose to go on dialysis and either get hooked up to a machine where they extract the blood or surgically implant a catheter in the abdomen and dialysize by pouring a solution called dialysate into the catheter, then emptying out the solution out of the abdomen through the same catheter. So even with years of medical practice on the subject of kidney disease, there are still many obstacles to overcome. Obstacles like choosing transplantation over dialysis, Hemodialysis over peritoneal dialysis, lifestyle choice that will enhance patients lives. Until then research shows that dialysizing a patient using standard medical procedures like hemodialysis and a healthy life style in nutrition and healthy attitude is the best choice to sustain life. It all begins when a person gets diagnosed with kidney failure. The two most common types of kidney failures are acute kidney failure or chronic kidney failure. “Acute kidney failure occurs when illness, infection, or injury damages the kidneys. Temporarily, the kidneys cannot remove fluids and wastes from the body.” (Anne and Ford). Causes range from dehydration, hemorrhage, septicemia, heart failure, liver failure, and burns. These causes do not really damage the kidneys, but they can cause diminished kidney functions, therefore affecting the patient. The common symptoms that are caused by acute kidney failure range from animus, bad breath, bone and joint problems, edema, frequent urination, headaches, lower back pain and many more. Gutierrez 2 kidney failure is as follows according to experts: Because many of the underlying conditions that often trigger acute kidney disease are critical, the prognosis of these patients often are not good. Studies have had estimated overall death rates for acute kidney disease failure at 42-88%. (Anne and Ford) These writers also go on to say, “Chronic kidney failure occurs when disease or disorder damages the kidneys so that they are no longer capable adequately removing fluids and wastes from the body.” (Anne and Ford). With Chronic kidney disease, the causes and symptoms are very different. For example, this type of kidney disease has four mains causes. There are many more causes, but usually it stems from diabetes, glomerulonephritis, hypertension, and poly cystic kidney disease. The common symptoms that are caused by chronic kidney failure range from anemia, bad breath, bone and joint problems, edema, frequent urination, headaches, lower back pain and many more almost the same as acute kidney failure. The same type of doctor that assists acute kidney patients also assists the chronic kidney patient. The prognosis for chronic kidney disease is as follows: Early diagnosis and treatment of kidney failure is critical to improving length and quality of life in chronic kidney failure patients. Overall, Patients with chronic kidney disease leading to ESRD have a shortened life span. According to United States Renal Data System, the life span of an ESRD patient is 18-47%. (Chronic). Both diseases are treated the same. Both diseases can be treated with hemodialysis or by peritoneal dialysis. The only difference is that with chronic kidney disease doctors can recommend transplantation.
