Flatland is written from the perspective of a square in the second dimension. The book begins by describing the view of the world in Flatland. It is by peering at the level of a table that one will understand what it would be like for a citizen to live in this second dimension (Pg. 4). It is in chapter 3 that the reader will discover the social status associated with the shapes of the figures within Flatland (Pg. 7). The women are shown as lines and considered very dangerous among the males of all different shapes. The next lowest figure in the society consists of triangles. The triangles represent the soldiers and citizens of the working class. The professional men of Flatland are squares. It is in this occupation that the reader associates the narrator of this story. The nobility follows with shapes of figures ranging with numerous sides. Finally there are the circles commonly known as the priests. They are the ones who govern Flatland and decide what is acceptable. The lower class figures of the land recognize one another by the sense of feeling (Pg. 15). However, the upper class citizens resort to a more sophisticated method with recognition by sight (Pg. 19). The square gives a brief history of Flatland (Pgs. 25-34) and gives the importance of perfection among each figure. Irregular shapes are to be destroyed (Pg. 24). The second half of the book concentrates on the square’s experience in the Pointland, Lineland, and Spaceland. His first encounter begins in Lineland through a dream (Pg. 43). An attempt to explain the second dimension to the king of the first does not go well as the king cannot fathom going any other direction then north or south (Pg. 49). The square then receives a visit from a man who resides in Spaceland. It is through him that the square becomes educated with the knowledge of the third dimension (Pg. 69). The book comes to an end as the square becomes imprisoned for revealing the doctrine of the third dimension among the people of Flatland (Pg. 81).
