French accomplished painter, sculptor and graphic designer, and one of the most influential artists of the 1900’s which is Henri (Henry) Émile Benoît Matisse. He was born on December 31, 1869 in Le Cateau, France. In the Picardy Region of northern France, Henry Matisse was born as the son of a grain merchant. As a child, Matisse grew up in a middle class family. In 1890, he recovered from an attack of appendicitis. At first, he studied and practiced law and worked as a law clerk. He was able to get an administrative job in the court. After he got interested in painting and art. Matisse got interested in painting while he was in bed ill for one year and his mother gave him a paint box. Out of boredom, he started to paint. He went to Paris to study art officially at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and experimented in various styles. Matisse also studied more contemporary art such as impressionism, which earned him a reputation as a rebellious member of his studio classes. His teachers were all reasonably moderate and all well trained academically. In 1899, his artistic liberation came from the influence of painters Paul Gaugin, Paul Cezanne and Vincent van Gogh. By 1905 he created some of the boldest images ever made. One of them was a striking picture of his wife Madam Matisse. It refers to a heavy stroke of radiant green that defines her brow and nose. He found his own style, which was daring bright colors performed in a broad-brush stroke.
