Before 1993: It was not mandatory for anyone to report suspected cases of child abuse in Victoria. Daniel Valerio saw 21 professional over 2 months before his death. Police visited Daniel’s Rosebud residence and allowed Daniel to stay in the care of his mother after seeing the state Daniel was in. The doctor’s report was not delivered till 4 days after the death of Daniel. Doctors and the police didn’t report the child abuse and it became to late for Daniel.
After 1993: Mandatory reporting was introduced in November 4 1993. It became mandatory for doctors, nurses, teachers and police, to report suspected incidents of child abuse. ... The death of Daniel Valerio and all the media coverage of his death saw the Government of Victoria bring in Mandatory reporting.
