Here, as part of the integrated project, I discuss what is ‘Trickle down and trickle up’. What is trickle down and trickle up. How it affects the fashion industry and socio-economic influences on the process.
Trickle down is a fashion trend that went from high-end designer to the masses and trickle up is the street influence the fashion to high-end designer.
Traditionally, the trickle down of fashion ideas was strongly driven by the class systems found in both pre and post war society. This downward trickle was driven by the desire of the lower and middle classes to aspire to belong and mimic the behaviour of the upper classes who were seen to be driving fashion direction. Georg Simmel suggested ‘trickle down’ theory of fashion as
“Social forms, apparel, aesthetic judgement, the whole style human expression, are constantly transformed by fashion in such a way, however, that fashion – i. ... the latest fashion – in all things affects only the upper classes. ... Naturally, the lower classes look and strive towards the upper, and they encounter least resistance in those fields that are subject to the whims of fashion; for it is here that mere external imitation is most readily applied. ... ”(1)
Simmel argues that fashion spreads vertically down the social hierarchy, that the upper socio-economic groups adopt fashion first and that the power classes each and in turn try to emulate the upper class leaders. However, this Simmel’s trickle-down theory may have described in previous centuries but how about today?
