The Chrysanthemums is a short story depicting Elisa Allen, whose dreams are disillusioned by reality. Steinbeck described rural California in the 1930’s as living in isolation. “The high gray-flannel fog of winter closed off the Salinas Valley from the sky and from all the rest of the world. On every side it sat like a lid on the mountains and made of the great valley a closed pot.” Is it symbolic that someone living in a “closed pot” would discover a mender of pots to give her hope for freedom? Elisa’s physical strength was shown by her hard work in the flower garden and by her energy when the stems seemed too small and easy to cut.
