The Famous French Chef, Julia Child
     There have been many successful chefs in the world today. But only Julia Child
has made such an overwhelming impact on the millions that have viewed her. Child
explored many job opportunities during her childhood, but soon quickly she found her
calling in a cooking show “The French Chef”. ... Julia Child has
inspired millions of Americans to enjoy cooking because of her great personality, and
wonderful cooking skills.
     Childhood
     Julia Child was born in Pasadena, California to her parents John and Carolyn
McWilliams, on August 15, 1912 (Chadwell). Child was the first born and was known as
a wild child compared to her younger siblings, Dorothy, and John McWilliams. The
McWilliams were very wealthy, and had many cooks throughout Julia Child’s childhood to
do the culinary work. ... To Julia “food represented science not pleasure”
(Chadwell). The McWilliams traveled very often, especially during the summer which
exposed Julia to a variety of foods and restaurants, and gave her the love of traveling
(Chadwell). ... At the age
of four, Child was enrolled at the Montessori school (Chadwell). This is where Child
learned her skillful coordination that would be so important in her future(Chadwell). When
Julia Child reached the age of nine she began attending a Polytechnical school. Child did
exceptionally well, and excelled here as an athlete and a student”(Chadwell). As a
teenager Child went to the Katherine Barson boarding school in Ross, California where
she began her study of the French and Italian language and developed her writing skills
(Chadwell). Child excelled verbally and dramatically but was not encouraged to take up a
theatrical career because of her “tomboy” appearance (Chadwell). While attending
Katherine Barson, Child knew she was not the typical little girl. ... in
1930 Child enrolled at Smith college as a history major, and aspired to become a novelist”
(Moritz 66). Child’s mother had gone to Smith college, and it was arranged that Julia
would attend Smith as well (Chadwell).
