I thought that nature was enough
Till Human nature came
But that the other did absorb
As Parallax a Flame (Emily Dickinson)
Nature and the Soul
Ralph Waldo Emerson was a utopian philosopher who believed man could follow the model of nature to become self-reliant. ... ” (Emerson xxxii) In his attempt to understand and balance society’s needs and its assurance for a self-reliant future, Emerson’s “Nature” metaphorically illustrates the importance of following the principles of nature. With the extensive use of symbolism Emerson demonstrates how by emulating nature’s beauty, language, and discipline man would be able to apply his intelligence to nature and work in cooperation with his fellow man to obtain an autonomous existence.
Emerson deemed the beauty of nature as a means of bringing inner peace. When exploring his insights about nature Emerson discusses how some “inhabitants of cities” may consider the countryside to be beautiful only half of the year. ... ” (Emerson 18) Emerson uses the metaphor of nature to evoke the reader into the realization of how a “high and divine beauty” is that which can be found in combination with the human will and that, which is expressed in worthy actions. ... Emerson goes on to explain how the beauty of nature may be viewed more resourcefully when is becomes “an object of the intellect” and is expressed in some form of art.
