1950s essay A decade that is remembered for the conservatism and “normalcy” would be the 1950s. Reflecting the past this decade can be described as surreal. People look back to the happy families, influential new age of music and shows, advancements in technology, medicine, and political events. The technology and medicine during the fifties consisted of many advancements. Near the start of the decade, the T.V. made great progressions when C.B.S. implemented commercials into their broadcast. Jonas Salk, discovered a vaccine for the deadly disease that killed many children, Polio. James Watson and Francis Crick, two scientists that worked at Cambridge University, created a model for the DNA called the Double Helix. Near the end the decade, in 1957, the infamous Sputnik was launched sending the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. into a “space race”, and created the National Aeronautic and Space Administration, or N.A.S.A.
