Colby Bingham TMA 102 Sec 13 It Happened One Night It Happened One Night is considered to be one of the greatest romantic comedies of all time. To relate the story to the viewer, and help us understand and enjoy the plot, this film took the form of a “classical Hollywood narrative.” “Classical Hollywood narrative,” is a mode of narrative which has a tendency to dominate fictional films. This mode of narrative is what we have most often been exposed to, and in turn, has let us become extremely comfortable with it. Generally, in a classic narrative, the film narrative depends on the main character, the protagonist, to give the film its story and action. The film usually focuses on the protagonists decisions, choices, and actions of the charater, and the consequences from these. It Happened One Night follows the concept of the “classic Hollywood narrative very well. The film introduces us, and lets us follow the two main characters of the story: a sarcastic and indifferent recently-fired newspaper man looking for a story; and a snobbish, high-class girl on the run.
