Essay – “A Patch of Blue” The novel “A Patch of Blue” by Elizabeth Kata does explore a number of issues. The issues of racism and discrimination effectively relate to the topic of Friends and Foes. Friendship is defined as someone who you can trust, rely n and share life with. The reader discovers that the main character, Selina has a limited amount of friends as a result of her disability and social standing. A foe is defined as an enemy. Selina’s disability and social standing result in her being lonely and isolated from others. She considers her ‘darkness’ as a foe. Discrimination is defined as unfavourable treatment based on prejudice. Elizabeth Kata portrays that people are discriminated against due to their race, skin colour, disability and social standing. The main character, Selina has experienced discrimination because of her disabilities such as her blindness & physical appearance and social standing which is low.
