Life of Oscar Romero Archbishop Romero or Oscar Arnulfo Romero was born in his hometown of Ciudad Barrios on August 15, 1917. Romero was the second born of 11 children Romero started life a a typical South American peasant. In his earlier years he was brought up as a carpenter. A little later in his life, he left his home and joined a seminary and spent years studying in Rome. At the time he joined his vocation to priesthood he was 13 years old. And in the year 1977, he became the archbishop of San Salvador. Life as Archbishop During his time as archbishop of San Salvador he quickly made a name for himself as a source of strength and peace for the people of San Salvador. And as a source of hope and support for the poor and oppressed people of San Salvador. He began his work by speaking publicly against the war and oppression, and spoke to inspire the Christians of his town to “work for justice.” Oscar knew what it was like to be oppressed and knew that oppression and war were prevailing ways of life for the people of San Salvador.
