Abstract
How is violence portrayed through the media? Violence is classified as exertion of physical force so as to injure or abuse; intense, turbulent, or furious and often destructive action or force. Violence is a significant part of everyday life for many people. ... Violence has been a prevalent part of everyday life since the Romans started events in the coliseum with gladiators (Felson, 1996). People enjoy watching violence between animals; e. ... Who is most affected by violent media? What is the impact of violent media in society today? What steps can be taken to decrease the exposure of people to violent media? ...
The exposure of people to violence has only gotten worse over time. ... With the amount of media surrounding people everyday, it is almost impossible to find some type of media that doesnt rely on violence to receive viewers. ... With these numbers its not hard to understand why todays children have so much exposure to violent media. Children ages 8-13 spend more time with media than any other age group, at 6 ¾ hours a day(Munoz, Smith 2000).
With the point of view media takes on violence, its easy to see why todays youth dont understand the true consequences of real violence. Any kind of technological media has some sort of twist on reality. ... The general public has become so numb to violence that it always takes more shocking violence to catch their attention.
The way violence is portrayed has a huge impact on the way the viewers respond to the violence. The more violent the media is, the more violent it makes people respond or act after experiencing the media. Video games are thought to be the worst of all types of media because of the way they portray violence. They make violence seem extremely realistic, and make it as though pain is not felt and that violence towards other people is acceptable. It is this theory that causes acts of serious and deranged violence to be committed.
Does Violent Media Cause Aggression?
Many people wonder if watching violent media actually causes violent tendencies. ... Laboratory experiments examine short-term effects of media violence. Most studies show that subjects in laboratory experiments who observe media violence tend to behave more aggressively than do subjects in control groups ( Felson 1996). The most common experiment which is used to determine the effects of violent media is using a large group and dividing the group in half. Then each half is told to watch violent or nonviolent media, and then without the subjects knowing, they are studied to see if their behavior has turned more violent after viewing the violent media. ... This shows how violent media does have a negative effect on peoples mentalities towards others .
Another study shows the effects of publicized violence. Homicide and Suicide rates were studied for fluctuations over time, especially during times of highly publicized public violence. ...
Where Does Violent Media Stem From?
Watching violence today is the same as it always been since the Romans enjoyed watching the gladiators (Felson 1996). It is human nature to enjoy violence, but sometimes that violence goes a little bit too far. When immature people witness too much violence, their actions correspond with the actions they are used to watching. ... When everything in our culture that is very serious and violent is downplayed by the media to be casual and acceptable, it begins to create a numbness to violence. The reason it is hard to decrease the amount of violence in todays media is because it has become so popular and people are accustomed to it. If the media decided to air only less violent shows, video games, and news reports, the public would be much less interested in the events they are watching.
