‘Never believe what you read in the papers’ this quote from Citizen Kane could also apply to that which the audience views on film, and the surface representations we receive of a person. ... Five narrators, each of whom provides their separate and different views of the man, deliver the account of Kane’s life and personality.
The prolific use of symbols provide the clues of Kane’s life for the audience to play detective and decipher their meaning. ... The circular structure of the films means that we end the journey in the same place we began, having gained knowledge of Kane’s life, we still don’t know any more of the actual man. The ‘No Trespassing’ sign also represents that we will never get an inside view of who Kane really was, only the views provided by each narrator and our own psychological analysis based on the inferences we make from the clues provided.
